Buying snapshot

Quick buying snapshot

A compact view of who this tool fits, what it costs, and what to confirm before choosing it.

Best for
  • Email and collaboration already run in Microsoft 365: Defender for Office 365 applies native policies and investigations across cloud mailboxes, Outlook, Teams, SharePoint, and OneDrive without introducing a separate user-facing mail platform.
  • The organization wants to consolidate email security and Microsoft SecOps workflows: Plan 2 connects email incidents, advanced hunting, campaigns, automated response, and Defender XDR context in the Microsoft Defender portal.
More buying conditions
  • Security awareness training should use Microsoft threat signals: Plan 2 includes attack simulation training with phishing simulations and targeted education; Plan 1 does not.
Not for
  • Primary mailboxes are outside Microsoft 365: The target is designed around Microsoft 365 cloud mailboxes and collaboration services; evaluation behind another gateway still requires Microsoft 365 cloud mailboxes.
  • The purchase must include DLP, compliance, SIEM, or human-managed response: Microsoft Purview, Microsoft Sentinel, and Defender Experts MDR are separate products or services and should be budgeted independently.
More buying conditions
  • A buyer requires a publicly guaranteed minimum contract, mailbox minimum, or full deployment cost: The public exact-plan page establishes rates, annual payment, and auto-renewal but not a minimum commitment, minimum quantity, implementation fee, or complete services cost.
Pricing
  • Two per-user paid editions with public US monthly rates, yearly payment, and an annual commitment. Plan 1 is the prevention and detection tier; Plan 2 is the advanced hunting, automation, training, and XDR tier. Eligible Microsoft suites can provide the same plan rights through broader bundle subscriptions.
  • Microsoft Defender for Office 365 Plan 1 · $2.00 USD · per user · per month · billed annually · one-year commitment
Free or trial access
  • No permanent free Defender for Office 365 plan. Eligible existing Microsoft 365 customers can receive automatically provisioned Plan 2 trial licenses for 90 days. Trials and evaluations are unavailable to U.S. Government and Microsoft 365 Education organizations; existing Plan 2 organizations use an unlimited audit-mode evaluation rather than a trial entitlement.

Product scope

Product functionality and purchase scope

This profile evaluates the current Microsoft Defender for Office 365 Plan 1 and Plan 2 subscriptions. Functionality reviewed
  • Microsoft Defender for Office 365 Plan 1 prevention, detection, alerts, real-time detections, Safe Links, Safe Attachments, advanced anti-phishing, and Teams, SharePoint, and OneDrive protection

  • Built-in protection for Microsoft 365 cloud mailboxes only as the baseline inherited beneath Defender for Office 365
  • Standalone or add-on subscription licensing for the same exact Plan 1 and Plan 2 entitlements
  • Policy scoping to licensed users, groups, email domains, shared mailboxes, and covered collaboration users
Non-target functionality excluded from scoring
  • Exchange Online Protection or built-in security for cloud mailboxes as a separate core plan
  • Office 365 E3/E5, Microsoft 365 E3/E5, Microsoft Defender Suite, and other Microsoft 365 bundles as duplicate target plans
  • Microsoft Defender XDR products for endpoints, identities, SaaS apps, and clouds beyond the Plan 2 email integration and cross-domain capabilities

  • Microsoft Sentinel licensing, ingestion, analytics, retention, and SIEM operations
  • Microsoft Defender Experts MDR and other managed or professional security services

Purchase paths

Pricing checked: Aug 12, 2026

  • Microsoft 365 E3: Microsoft 365 E3 includes Defender for Office 365 Plan 1 capabilities from July 1, 2026. It remains a broader suite path rather than a duplicate target plan.
  • Office 365 E5: Office 365 E5 is a broader productivity and security subscription that provides user rights for Defender for Office 365 Plan 2. It is not a third Defender for Office 365 plan, and no Office 365 E5 bundle price is carried into this profile.
  • Microsoft 365 E5: Microsoft 365 E5 is a broader suite that provides Defender for Office 365 Plan 2 rights and can add entitlements, such as Safe Documents, that are not established for the standalone Defender plans.
  • Microsoft Defender Suite: Microsoft Defender Suite is a broader security bundle that supplies email and collaboration security alongside endpoint, identity, SaaS, and XDR protection. Its bundle price and prerequisites are not Defender for Office 365 plan offers.

Commercial scope needs confirmation

Current official sources describe an offer or purchase route differently. The page remains usable, but affected price schema is withheld until the scope is resolved.

  • The current Plan 2 product card advertises support for opening documents in protected view, while the current feature service description says Safe Documents is available only with Microsoft 365 E5 or Microsoft Defender Suite and is not included in Defender for Office 365 plans. Protected-view scanning is therefore not treated as a confirmed standalone Plan 2 entitlement.

Detection accuracy17%
82

Applies dedicated mailbox intelligence and customizable phishing thresholds to adapt detections, although manual tuning is needed to optimize results.

BEC and identity protection15%
86

User and domain impersonation protection together with mailbox intelligence directly address common BEC and identity-spoofing patterns on cloud mailboxes, while priority-account protection and broader XDR correlation require Plan 2.

Response operations14%
83

Automated investigation and response, Threat Explorer, campaigns, threat trackers, and advanced hunting in Plan 2, plus Plan 1 ZAP and alerts, enable structured response operations, but those deeper tools are unavailable on Plan 1 alone.

Platform coverage and deployment13%
74

Restricts its deployment footprint entirely to Microsoft 365 environments, offering no support for non-Microsoft mailbox hosting.

Governance and integrations11%
70

Plan 2 supplies Microsoft Defender XDR incident correlation and cross-domain hunting, while Purview DLP, Sentinel, Safe Documents, and managed MDR remain separate products or entitlements outside standalone Plan 1 or Plan 2.

Support and total cost10%
66

US public rates are USD 2.00 per user per month for Plan 1 and USD 5.00 for Plan 2, both billed annually with a one-year commitment, yet licensing extends to shared mailboxes and collaboration users, no managed response is included, and related DLP, SIEM, or MDR services add separate cost.

Detailed strengths and purchase cautions
Pros

Why it is worth considering

  • Safe Links and Safe Attachments provide malicious URL and file detonation protection across email, Office clients, Teams, SharePoint, and OneDrive, including real-time coverage for QR-code attacks.
  • Advanced anti-phishing supplies user and domain impersonation protection together with mailbox intelligence to support phishing and related identity-attack detection on cloud mailboxes.
  • Plan 2 adds Threat Explorer, campaign analysis, automated investigation and response, attack simulation training, and Microsoft Defender XDR incident correlation for security-operations workflows.
  • Plan 1 real-time detections, alerts, email entity context, reporting, and post-delivery ZAP enable ongoing remediation after messages reach mailboxes.
Cons

What to confirm before buying

  • Protection is anchored on Microsoft 365 cloud mailboxes, so non-Microsoft mailbox platforms are unsupported and an upstream third-party gateway limits Defender evaluation to audit mode until mail flow changes.
  • Threat Explorer, campaigns, advanced hunting, automated investigation and response, attack simulation training, and cross-domain XDR require Plan 2
  • Plan 1 remains limited to prevention, detection, alerts, and reporting.
  • Licenses must cover benefiting users, shared mailboxes that receive protection, and users covered by Safe Links or collaboration protections, which can expand the licensed population beyond primary mailboxes.

Fit for Microsoft 365 buyers that want native email and collaboration protection with plan-specific escalation from prevention to hunting and response, provided they confirm user licensing scope and whether they need Plan 2 features or an included bundle entitlement.

Review confidence
80/100
Model details
Strengths
  • Plan 1 includes Safe Links, Safe Attachments, advanced anti-phishing and impersonation protection, real-time detections, reporting, and post-delivery ZAP response for Microsoft 365 cloud mailboxes.
  • Plan 2 adds Threat Explorer, campaigns, threat trackers, advanced hunting, automated investigation and response, attack simulation training, and Microsoft Defender XDR incident correlation for teams that need deeper security operations workflows.
  • The product is positioned for Microsoft 365 cloud mailbox deployment, which matches organizations that want email and collaboration protection inside the Microsoft stack rather than a separate gateway architecture.
Cautions
  • The commercial model requires licensing for benefiting users and covered shared mailboxes, so buyers need to confirm the scope of every protected mailbox and collaboration user before purchase.
  • The public pricing is billed annually with a one-year commitment, and the supplied facts do not establish a public minimum quantity or cancellation terms.
  • The fact pattern does not establish Safe Documents as a standalone Defender for Office 365 entitlement, so buyers who need that capability should contractually verify the Microsoft SKU or bundle.
GeminiAI-assisted buyer perspective79

Microsoft Defender for Office 365 offers native, integrated security for organizations utilizing Microsoft 365 cloud mailboxes, but buyers must navigate feature gating between Plan 1 and Plan 2 alongside licensing requirements for shared mailboxes and collaboration users.

FAQ

Microsoft Defender for Office 365 FAQ

What is the difference between Defender for Office 365 Plan 1 and Plan 2?

Plan 1 adds Safe Links, Safe Attachments, advanced anti-phishing and impersonation protection, alerts, real-time detections, and collaboration protection. Plan 2 includes Plan 1 and adds Threat Explorer, campaigns, threat trackers, advanced hunting, automated investigation and response, attack simulation training, and XDR capabilities.

Is Exchange Online Protection a Defender for Office 365 plan?

No. Exchange Online Protection and the built-in security features for cloud mailboxes provide baseline anti-spam, malware, spoofing, quarantine, and reporting. Defender for Office 365 adds advanced protection and response above that baseline.

Does Office 365 E5 include Defender for Office 365?

Yes. Microsoft lists Office 365 E5 as providing rights for users to benefit from Defender for Office 365 Plan 2. Office 365 E5 remains a broader bundle, not a separate Defender plan.

Is Microsoft Defender XDR the same product as Defender for Office 365?

No. Defender for Office 365 is the email and collaboration security product. Plan 2 adds integration and cross-domain XDR capabilities, while the wider Defender XDR solution can combine signals from separately licensed endpoint, identity, SaaS, and cloud products.

Is Safe Documents included in standalone Defender for Office 365 Plan 2?

Do not assume it is included. Microsoft's current feature service description excludes Safe Documents from Defender for Office 365 plans and assigns it to Microsoft 365 E5 or Microsoft Defender Suite, despite protected-view wording on the Plan 2 product card.

Is there a free trial?

Eligible existing Microsoft 365 customers can receive a 90-day Defender for Office 365 Plan 2 trial in audit or blocking mode. Government and education organizations are excluded, and the trial is not a permanent plan.

Are shared mailboxes free from licensing?

No blanket exemption is stated. Microsoft requires licenses for shared mailboxes that benefit from Defender for Office 365 protections and for users covered by Safe Links or collaboration protections.

Does the subscription include a managed security service?

No managed human response service is established as part of Plan 1 or Plan 2. Defender Experts MDR is a separate Microsoft managed detection and response service.
